AFP photographer Adem Altan, finalist for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize
Mesut Hancer holds the hand of his 15-year-old daughter Irmak, who died in the earthquake in Kahramanmaras, close to the quake's epicentre, the day after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the country's southeast on Februrary 7, 2023. Rescuers in Türkiye and Syria braved frigid weather, aftershocks and collapsing buildings, as they dug for survivors buried by an earthquake that killed more than 5,000 people.
Adem Altan has also won several awards for this same photo, including the World Press Photo 2024 for Europe and 3rd prize in the News Single category at the Istanbul Photo Awards 2024.
Adem Altan has been a photojournalist for the past 40 years and joined AFP 15 years ago.
His production contributed to the overall coverage of Turkey, where he made an impressive reportage during the Gezi riots, near Taksim Square in Istanbul in 2013 and he took this picture, which has won several international awards.
