Luis Tato, AFP’s East Africa Photo Coordinator, Wins Photo Prize at 'Covering Climate Now' Awards

AFP’s East Africa Photo Coordinator, Luis Tato has won the Photo category at the ‘Covering Climate Now’ Awards for his remarkable photography series taken at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya.

The Reteti sanctuary in Kenya has been overwhelmed by rescue operations due to the severe drought in the Namunyak Nature Reserve, resulting in an influx of orphaned and abandoned elephant calves. The drought has deprived Kenyan wildlife of their usual sources of food and water, putting the local population at risk and jeopardizing the entire region's biodiversity.

Earlier this year, Tato's photo series also received recognition at the NPPA 2023 Awards, securing 3rd place in the "Science" category and an honourable mention in the "Science Story" category.

The Covering Climate Awards were established in 2021 to celebrate the best of environmental journalism. AFP was honoured last year in the video category for the report titled "Coastal Cities face their mortality on the climate 'frontline'."
