"Human rights" category

In the "Human Rights" category, photojournalist Martin Bernetti received a mention for his essay La última frontera ("The Last Frontier"). 

In this series, the images portray several migrants trying to reach Chile. In Arica, the border police patrol controls the entering of migrants. During their journey they cross the desert, in dehydrating heat and penetrating cold temperatures. When they finally arrive, they set up in camps located in Colchane or in the city of Iquique. There, not only do they face uncertainty, but also violent anti-migrant protests.  
 

 

"News" category

In the "News" category, photojournalist Mauro Pimentel received a mention for his essay entitled ¿Solo otro maldito día? (“Just another damn day”). His photographs depict the city of Rio de Janeiro under the government of Jair Bolsonaro, during police operations against drug traffickers that have turned the city into a battlefield, leaving trails of blood in the houses and streets of the favelas. 

 

"Portrait" category

In the "Portrait" category, photojournalist Ernesto Benavides received a mention for his essay entitled I Remember You. 

The series shows people from Morropón to Catacaos, in northern Peru, paying tribute to their loved ones who died with Covid-19, displaying posters and photos in their homes. On 22 October 2021, Peru passed the 200,000 mark in Covid-19 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health, making it the country with the highest rate of Covid deaths in the world.

Ernesto Benavides is a Peruvian photographer working mainly in South America. His work for AFP has been published by major media such as The New York Times, Le Monde, and El País. Winner of multiple awards, Benavides has received, among others, the bronze medal at the PX3 Prix de la Photographie in 2018, the National Journalism Award from the Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) in 2017, and second prize in the POY LATAM competition that same year for his series "La Pampa", which documents the impact of illegal mining in the Peruvian jungle. In 2021 he was awarded World Press Photo 2021 in the "Spot News" category for a series of photographs taken during the protests in Peru over the impeachment of President Martin Vizcarra in November 2020.

 

 

 

Martin Bernetti is a photographer with more than 25 years of experience, who has traveled the world covering international news. He has reported for the Miami Herald (USA), The Independent and Sunday Telegrapher Magazine (UK), Time Magazine (USA), Stern (Germany), and Paris Match (France) among others. In 2005 he moved to Chile and since then he has worked as Chief of photography for the AFP.

 

 

 

Mauro Pimentel, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil since 2017, is an AFP staff photojournalist. Before that, he worked as a regular freelance photojournalist for Associated Press, Folha de São Paulo, Estadao, El País, Veja and UOL. Pimentel covered many stories, such as Nelson Mandela’s funeral, the Brumadinho Dam collapse, the Paralympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro and the long popular riseup of protests between 2013 and 2014 in Brazil against corruption.
