Two photographers win World Press Photo Awards for AFP
Fabio BUCCIARELLI and Javier MANZANO respectively take 2nd and 3rd place for the “Spot News Stories” category
Italian photojournalist Fabio Bucciarelli, age 32, was awarded for his report on the Syrian rebels in Aleppo, Syria entitled “Battle to Death”. With a degree in engineering specialising in digital imagery, Fabio Bucciarelli began his career as a photojournalist in 2009. Since then he has covered a number of major conflicts like those in Sudan and Syria in 2012 and Mali in 2013 with a strong focus on human rights.
American photojournalist Javier Manzano was awarded for a series that was also shot in Aleppo and quietly entitled “Battle for Aleppo”. His shots were taken in October 2012. Javier Manzano is a photographic reporter and video journalist. Among his achievements are his coverage of the drug cartels in Mexico and a series of portraits in Afghanistan. His wider interests include border relations between nations.
For this edition, over 103,000 photos were submitted to the jury composed of 19 photojournalism and photo documentary professionals who selected 54 award-winning photographers from 32 different nationalities in eighteen categories from among 5,666 photographers from 124 different nationalities.
