Inside AFP

The Comprova Project, a media consortium in Brazil of which AFP has been a member since 2018, has won the Press Freedom Award 2021 awarded by the National Association of Newspapers (ANJ). This award is shared with the Consórcio de Veículos de Imprensa, since both initiatives were recognized for the crucial role of journalism and cooperation between agencies, fighting digital misinformation through fact-checking.

The award will be presented to representatives of the Comprova Project and the Consórcio de Veículos de Imprensa on December 1^st.

AFP was one of the first news agencies to set up a blog entirely dedicated to fact-checking in 2017. Since then, the fight against misinformation has become an editorial priority. A world leader in digital verification, AFP is Facebook's largest global news checking partner in the "Third Party Fact Check" program, and supports several international collaborative projects:

• Trusted News Initiative, a shared alert system with major international media outlets and platforms such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter to identify and prevent the spread of misinformation about coronavirus.

• CoronavirusFacts Alliance, created by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). AFP is a signatory to its "code of principles". The initiative has created a database with contributions from over 100 independent fact-checking organizations around the world.

• AFP is part of several projects in Latin America such as the Comprova Project, LatamChequea, and more recently Ecuador Verifica. .

• In Europe, throughout 2020 the agency has worked alongside Full Fact and Maldita.es, and since November 1st this year it will collaborate with the 444.hu agency in Hungary.

AFP's digital investigation network has become the world's largest network in this field, with more than 120 specialized AFP journalists in about 30 offices around the world, covering 80 countries and 24 languages.
