Fact Check: award for AFP Warsaw bureau

Natalia Sawka and Maja Czarnecka, from the AFP Warsaw bureau, have received an award for their fact-checking work.

Natalia and Maja received their prize, along with other Polish fact-checking organizations, from the Press Club Polska at a ceremony at the Bellotto Hotel in Warsaw on April 26.

“Disinformation is an extremely powerful weapon,” Press Club Polska president Marcin Lewicki said at the ceremony.

“Even someone who is informed and has a critical mind cannot on their own win against disinformation... That is why the work of our award winners is so important,” he said.

AFP Sprawdzam was set up in 2019 and was one of AFP’s first fact-checking hubs outside Paris.

“This award for us is a recognition of all professional digital verification journalists but also all those who are simply not indifferent to lies and devote their time, their energy and their knowledge to wage their own war for truth on the web,” Maja and Natalia said in their acceptance speech.
