First digital investigations training for Portuguese-speaking journalists in Africa

Three AFP digital investigations journalists trained around 30 journalists from Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe and Mozambique in Maputo between 12 and 14 July.

Maria Clara Pestre and Cecilia Sorgine, fact-check editors in Rio de Janeiro, and Elodie Martinez, digital investigations training coordinator in Paris, shared online research and verification techniques with professionals working in television, radio, online and print media.

"This training will enable us to expand our scope of action. This is an innovative initiative, and we have acquired knowledge and techniques that we will share with our colleagues in our respective countries", says Laurinda Lituai, a journalist with Angola's National Radio in the province of Moxico.

"It's a relevant event because it also creates a platform for exchange and dialogue within the Portuguese-language journalism community on the African continent. We are all worried and we all want to know about the mechanisms and tools that exist to combat disinformation, especially in the face of so many global crises", said Angolan freelance journalist Israel Campos.

The training course was organised by the International Center For Journalists (ICFJ) with the support of Africa Regional Services, which are part of the US State Department. The ICFJ had already asked AFP to organise a digital investigation training course for journalists from French-speaking African countries in Dakar in March 2023.
