AFP rewarded at World Press Photo in Latin America
The World Press Photo Foundation has announced the regional winners of the renowned photo contest for the 2023 edition. This regional format brings together a regional and global jury that selects the winners from each region in four categories: Single Images, Series, Long-Term Projects, and Free Format. Tomás Cuesta, freelance photographer, was awarded a prize for AFP in Latin America.
He received an honourable mention for his image taken during the celebrations of Argentine fans at the Obelisk of Buenos Aires after the country won the World Cup in Qatar on December 18, 2022. A few days later, five million people would gather to join in the celebrations of the national team in one of the largest events of the country's history.
Tomás Cuesta is a photographer and video artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He focuses on press, sports, entertainment, and documentaries. Having grown up in the world of photography, Tomás Cuesta began his career at a young age. Today he works for several media, including AFP, Getty Images, Reuters and La Nación.
The regional winners compete for the world winner award in each category. The four global winners - World Press Photo of the Year, World Press Photo Story of the Year, World Press Photo Long-Term Project Award and World Press Photo Open Format Award - will be announced on April 20, 2023.
