Israeli strikes have been pounding Gaza since Hamas's October 7 attack. By the end of 2023, 85 percent of Gaza's 2.4 million people have been displaced, according to the UN, which warns of a growing risk of hunger and disease as desperate families shelter in makeshift tents against the winter cold.

Sameer al-Doumy has won the price young photographer for his series covering the earthquake in Türkiye.

Death Ghost / Türkiye

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit near Gaziantep in the early hours of February 6, followed by another 7.5-magnitude tremor just after midday, and another 6.4-magnitude earthquake two weeks later on February 20. The initial quakes caused widespread destruction in southern Türkiye and northen Syria. This is considered the most severe earthquake Türkiye has experienced in almost 100 years. It also sent shockwaves across north Syria and parts of Lebanon.

 

Adrian Dennis  has won the second place in the category Sport Single for his picture covering Wimbledon Championships.

Adem Altan has won the third price in the category News Single for his picture covering the earthquake in Türkiye.

Where Words Fail / Türkiye

Mesut Hancer holds the hand of his 15-year-old daughter Irmak, who died in the earthquake in Kahramanmaras, close to the quake's epicentre, the day after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the country's southeast on Feburary 7, 2023. Rescuers in Türkiye and Syria braved frigid weather, aftershocks and collapsing buildings, as they dug for survivors buried by an earthquake that killed more than 5,000 people.

This month, Adem Altan has also won the World Press Photo 2024 for Europe for the same picture.
