AFP takes a contemporary approach for its third photography exhibition and auction

AFP is proud to present Iconoclaste, a photography exhibition and auction for art lovers and photography enthusiasts. This iconic event, now in its third year, will showcase 200 unique special-edition prints in an engaging auction, preceded by a captivating exhibition.

This highly anticipated event will run from 29 September to 14 October 2023, at Quai de la Photo, the newly established floating art centre dedicated to contemporary photography, located in the heart of Paris.

Following the success of previous editions, which primarily featured black and white images that explored historical themes and AFP’s analogue archives, the autumn 2023 selection promises to be modern, thought-provoking, and colourful.

These captivating images challenge the conventions of news photography, exploring different aspects of the medium and highlighting the vision of their creators.

‘‘This third edition, entitled Iconoclaste, firmly plunges us into the 21st century. Strangely enough, the selection evokes a feeling of light and energy. It’s as if amidst the chaos of current affairs and the turbulence of our times, these pristine snapshots emerge,’’ emphasises Marielle Eudes, Director of Special Photo Projects at AFP.

The exhibition will include works by acclaimed photographers such as Yasuyoshi Chiba, known for capturing the essence of humanity. Dimitar Dilkoff, acclaimed for his poetic style, and Bülent Kiliç, renowned for his discerning eye, are also among the several other authors featured in this collection.

‘‘These photographs are those we stumble upon in newspapers, those that attract our gaze, those that grip our memory... Like paintings encountered in a museum, there are images in the realm of current affairs that we glimpse once and find impossible to let go!’’ said French journalist and author Sonia Devillers, who has generously sponsored the event and written the editorial note for the Iconoclaste catalogue.

Proceeds from the auction will be dedicated to the restoration and preservation of AFP’s photographic archives, which represent an invaluable historical, cultural, and artistic legacy.

The auction, set to take place on 14 October at Quai de la Photo from 2:00 PM, will be conducted by Elsa Joly-Malhomme from ADER Entreprises & Patrimoine, under the expert guidance of Antoine Romand. Bidders worldwide will also have the opportunity to participate online through drouot.com.

The items for sale are high-quality modern prints produced by the Picto Laboratory and presented in Nielsen frames. Each photograph, unique in their format, is signed, marked with a dry stamp, and certified by AFP as ‘special edition No. 1/1.
