From Ukraine to Mauritania, AFP takes centre stage at the 35th edition of the ‘Visa pour l’Image’ Festival in Perpignan

From the 2nd to the 17th of September 2023, the International Festival of Photojournalism, Visa pour l’Image, will showcase the exceptional work of AFP photographers, including Dimitar Dilkoff and Marco Longari.

For this anniversary edition, Visa pour l’Image will present around twenty exhibitions and six screening evenings that chronicle the most significant events from September 2022 to August 2023, alongside discussions, conferences, and networking opportunities.

Memorial crosses are seen on the new graves at a cemetery in the southern city of Kherson on December 28, 2022.

Dimitar Dilkoff’s extensive documentation of the war in Ukraine will be showcased at Hôtel Pams in an exhibition titled ‘On Both Sides of the Frontline.’ Dilkoff has been capturing the Ukraine conflict through his lens since 2014 — from the outbreak of hostilities following the Russian annexation of Crimea to the initial clashes in Donbass between Ukrainian soldiers and pro-Russian separatists, backed and armed by Moscow.

Over a period of nine years, Dilkoff traversed the frontline, or rather, the multiple frontlines. He explored abandoned villages, homes with shattered walls, and cellars filled with children, all results of the conflict. What common ground exists between a Russian trench and a Ukrainian trench? Everything. What distinguishes a cellar in Mykolaïv from an air raid shelter in Donetsk? Nothing. Dilkoff’s photos portray a shared humanity, illustrated through embraces, lost and vacant gazes, and tormented bodies, alongside numerous crosses placed within forests and fields.

The testimony of other AFP photographers who have been documenting the Ukraine war and its aftermath will also be showcased in a session dedicated to the conflict, on Friday, 8th September.

Abdullah Habbot, 45, poses for a portrait at his library, founded by his family over 200 years ago, in Chinguetti, on March 16, 2023.

On Wednesday, 6th September 2023, Marco Longari’s insightful portrayal of Mauritania will take centre stage in a screening scheduled at Campo Santo. Longari, who serves as AFP’s Chief Photo Editor for Africa, will delve into a wide range of subjects, including education, the livelihoods of fishermen, urbanisation, the impact of climate change, and the hidden treasures of Chinguetti’s libraries.
