AFP unites more than 100 media outlets to fight against disinformation during the 2023 Argentinian elections

Last Monday, AFP and the NGO Chequeado lauched a new edition of the collaborative journalism consortium Reverso, uniting over 100 media outlets and organizations.

Reverso was launched for the first time during the 2019 Argentinian elections. Its objective is to fight against disinformation throughout the entirety of the elections through the production of articles and audio-visual content.

To achieve this goal, the Spanish-speaking fact-checking team of AFP Factual and Chequeado have united forces once again through a consortium involving over 100 written and digital Argentinian news outlets, as well as through radio and television outlets.

"AFP is proud to participate in this important and innovative project, whose main objective is to protect the electoral environment in Argentina against the erosion of trust caused by disinformation", said María Lorente, Regional Director for AFP in Latin America.

"Chequeado and AFP are excited to once again promote a project aimed at improving the electoral process by providing verified information and, most importantly, by generating content in a collaborative way. This aims to reduce the propagation of disinformation during a pivotal period for the transparency of the democratic system”, said Pablo M. Fernández, General Director of Chequeado.

The consortium also intends to educate journalists throughout Argentina about control and verification techniques.

The articles created together by AFP Factual and Chequeado will be published on the website www.reversoar.com between June and December 2023, the point at which the new Argentinian government is set to take over office.

On their end, Reverso’s media outlets are committing themselves to releasing content without changes or modifications, and to update or correct articles that they have already publish if the alliance decides that contains false elements.

Argentina, with a population of 46 million inhabitants, will be hosting its first round of elections on October 22, 2023.
