Brazilian Indigenous people from different tribes take part in a demonstration

Brazilian Indigenous people from different tribes take part in a demonstration against the so-called legal thesis Marco Temporal (Temporal Milestone), a proposal that could jeopardize the protection of ancestral lands, a day before the country's highest court is due to resume hearing the case, in Brasilia, on June 7, 2023. The lower house passed on May 30, 2023, a controversial bill barring Indigenous reservations on lands where native peoples were not present in 1988, when the current Constitution was adopted. Indigenous groups argue that cutoff violates their rights, given that many native peoples were forced from their ancestral lands, especially during Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship.
