Picture shows shooting stars streaking across the Milky Way

A picture taken in Fontainebleau, southern Paris on August 13, 2023 shows shooting stars streaking across the Milky Way during the "Nuits des étoiles" (Starry Night), a major annual celebration for astronomy enthusiasts. Since 1991, Nuits des étoiles has been organized by teams of volunteer astronomers. Celestial dust will be the theme of the 2023 edition of Nuits des étoiles, organized by the Association Française d'Astronomie and more than 250 clubs, associations, planetariums and town halls. The celestial spectacle will also be at its peak with the Perseids. The deep sky will be within reach of our telescopes, from the Milky Way north to south, from Cassiopeia and Perseus to Scorpio and Sagittarius, towards the galactic center.

Triathlon athletes start to compete swimming in the Seine river during a Test Event for the women's triathlon for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, on August 17, 2023. From August 17 to 20, 2023, Paris 2024 is organising four triathlon events to test several arrangements, such as the sports operations, one year before the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The swim familiarisation event follows the cancellation on August 6 of the pre-Olympics test swimming competition due to excessive pollution which forced organisers to cancel the pre-Olympics event.

Columns of smoke, pictured from the village of Guimar, on August 17, 2023, billow from a huge wildfire which broke out almost two days ago and is raging in the northeastern part of the Canary island of Tenerife. The huge wildfire ravaging the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife that has burnt through more than 2,600 hectares of land is the "most complex" blaze to hit the Canary Islands in four decades, the regional government said today.

A Mercy Worldwide volunteer makes damage assessment of charred apartment complex in the aftermath of a wildfire in Lahaina, western Maui, Hawaii on August 12, 2023. Hawaii's Attorney General, Anne Lopez, said August 11, she was opening a probe into the handling of devastating wildfires that killed at least 80 people in the state this week, as criticism grows of the official response. The announcement and increased death toll came as residents of Lahaina were allowed back into the town for the first time.
